It’s time to prepare for winter deliveries, says Watsonville propane team

-Kids returning to school and the weather cooling down from summer are signs that it’s also time to get ready for winter propane deliveries, reports the team from Wildhorse Propane & Appliance. “First thing to do is make sure you are on a delivery schedule,” says Steve Dodson, owner of the Watsonville propane company.

Getting on a regular delivery schedule is just a phone call away. Scheduled deliveries help make sure no one runs out of propane during those cold and rainy days. Other preparations include:

  • Consider starting off October or November with an extra delivery. Sometimes winter usage is more than normal, and there’s also the possibility of storms and emergency road conditions delaying regular deliveries.
  • Make sure there is clear access to the propane tank. Clear any overgrowth and low-hanging branches and compact and level the driveway or path to the tank to reduce mud and puddles.
  • Prune tree branches and shrubs away from the propane tank. There should be at least a 10-foot clearance around the tank.
  • Don’t park vehicles in the driveway to the tank. If there is no other place to park, make sure vehicles are moved before the delivery.
  • After storms, remove fallen branches or other storm debris that may have blown into the access road or path.

The Watsonville propane company makes every effort to make deliveries on time, but California’s winter storms can cause road closures and other kinds of damage that temporarily delay deliveries. Planning ahead is one of the best ways to avoid running out of propane due to delayed deliveries.

Other measures to take before the winter rains arrive include:

  • Have the propane tank inspected and make needed repairs.
  • Inspect for any gas line leaks or appliance leaks and make the needed repairs.
  • Consider installing a larger capacity tank if there are concerns about running out over the winter months.
  • Make sure you know how to read the tank’s gauge and check it regularly. It may be necessary to check more often in the winter and to get an extra delivery.
  • Make sure you are familiar with propane safety procedures
  • Sign up for automatic, scheduled deliveries instead of on-call. Even though Wildhorse Propane makes every effort to support all of its customers, storms can cause delays in getting to everyone on the many different routes.
