What makes propane environmentally-friendly?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the highest sources of environmental pollution, ranked in order, are:  

Transportation

Transportation, contributing 28% of environmental pollution, is the leading source of greenhouse gas and carbon emissions, primarily by passenger vehicles, freight trucks, and aviation.

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) reports that “today’s propane on-road engines are 90% cleaner than mandated EPA NOx standards, with virtually zero particulate matter emissions.”

Use of propane for transportation (autogas) significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions more than diesel or gasoline. Propane-powered buses produce up to 60% fewer greenhouse gases than conventional buses.

Electricity generation

Electricity generation contributes approximately 25% of greenhouse gas emissions. Around 65% of the US electrical grid is powered predominantly by coal and natural gas. Propane produces 35% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than coal or other petroleum products.

Industry

Industrial fossil fuels, used for a variety of processes, contribute around 23% of emissions.

Propane is used by industry primarily to power forklifts, port tractors, and light-duty utility carts. Propane is the preferred fuel because it delivers constant power throughout shifts, and refueling canisters can be quickly swapped, virtually eliminating downtime.

Combined, commercial and residential heating, cooling, cooking, and other uses of fossil fuels contribute 13% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Switching to propane appliances can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, for example:

  • Propane-powered cooking ranges generate 15% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than electric ranges.
  • Water heaters reduce emissions by 56% compared to electric water heaters.

Propane has an indefinite shelf life and can be stored on-site.

The role of renewable propane

The emerging, renewable propane’s carbon intensity is lower than that of conventional propane because it’s made from bio-based renewable sources. Emerging over the past decade, renewable propane is chemically identical to conventional propane and can seamlessly be substituted for every application without modification.

Made from sustainable sources, renewable propane offers the same safety, economic, and environmental features as conventional propane, with even lower carbon emissions.

The camelina plant, in the mustard family and related to cabbage, kale, and cauliflower, is becoming a primary source for renewable propane. It is a cover crop that is beneficial to farmers because it enriches the soil, prevents erosion, is drought tolerant and supports bees and other pollinators. The seed produces 40% oil, twice that of soybeans. Nothing of the camelina plant is wasted. The meal is FDA approved form cow and chicken feed, and the husks for mulch.
